SML AND COURTAULD CAREERS: STANDING OUT IN A COMPETITIVE JOB MARKET
COURTAULD INSTITUTE OF ART, LONDON
On 16th January, some very lucky students at the Courtauld Institute of Art will once again participate in an expert panel discussion with speakers from Christie’s and Rosie Allan, Managing Director at SML. Topics of discussion will include insight into the various stages of the recruitment process, a range of perspectives from various sectors and organisations, and real-world advice at each stage.

SML AND MARGUERITE: SOPHIE MACPHERSON DISCUSSION WITH TIM MARLOW, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ART
ISABEL, MAYFAIR
On Wednesday 9th October, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Arts, Tim Marlow spoke with Founder & Director of SML, Sophie Macpherson at the discussion co-hosted in partnership with Marguerite. Prior to his appointment at the Royal Academy, Marlow was Director of Exhibitions at White Cube for over 10 years. Marlow has been involved in the contemporary art world for the past twenty-five years as curator, writer and award-winning radio and television broadcaster. Having trained as an art historian, he has also worked with many of the most important and influential artists of our time. Marlow sits on the Board of Trustees for the Imperial War Museum, Sadler’s Wells, Artichoke, Art on the Underground Advisory Board, The British School at Rome and Cultureshock Media. Sophie and Tim discussed his career to date, the difference between working in a commercial gallery to a public institution and his next step as Director of the Design Museum. Champagne, cocktails and canapés were generously served by Isabel.

SOTHEBY’S INSTITUTE OF ART, NEW YOK CITY
On 30th July, SML’s NYC Senior Consultant, Yolande Whitcomb, discussed top positions in the art world and revealed key publications and events for getting up to speed on art careers. Positions as wide ranging as art insurance brokers, collection managers, registrars, art handlers, sales, communications, PR and marketing roles were covered in Yolande’s informative presentation.

SML AND MAYFAIR ART WEEKEND
MAYFAIR, LONDON
Since 2002, SML has helped galleries, art fairs, auction houses and museums across the globe to find the very best talent in the international art market. The team has supported Mayfair Art Weekend since they launched back in 2014, providing over 145 volunteers over five years and currently 75 volunteer alumni are working in the art world at auction houses, blue chip galleries, leading museums & institutes.

Women in the Art Market panel for the Cambridge Women in Business Society
On 13th March, Sophie Macpherson spoke at the ‘Women in the Art Market’ panel for the Cambridge Women in Business Society at the University of Cambridge. This was an insightful discussion, enabling the Society’s members to learn more about opportunities within the art world.

Invaluable Global Auction House Summit
On 5th February, SML was thrilled to be a part of the inaugural London Global Auction House Summit 2019 at The Landmark London, discussing the fast-moving and ever-changing global art market. Sophie shared the stage with Martina Batovic (Dorotheum), Farah Nayeri (The New York Times), Isabel Paagman (Sotheby’s), Rebecca Tooby-Desmond (Phillips), and Michelle LeBlanc Leckert (Neals Auction House), discussing all things female artists, glass ceilings and the exciting current and future developments and trends in this area.

On 13th September, SML Founder Sophie Macpherson was in conversation with Director of The National Portrait Gallery Nicholas Cullinan; Head of Collections International Art at Tate, Gregor Muir; and Director of Frieze Art Fair, Victoria Siddall. The speakers shared stories of where they started out, how they’ve got to the impressive positions they hold today, advice to their 25 year old selves and the great importance of having a passion for what you do.
