SML X Working Arts Club: Career’s Club
Last Wednesday, we were thrilled to partner with the Working Arts Club to host an evening of networking that allowed members to connect with senior experts in the industry.
The Working Arts Club is a fantastic initiative bringing together professionals in the arts who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. At SML, we take great pride in our unique role as intermediaries in the art world, and we’re excited to create and support meaningful networking opportunities like this. It was inspiring to see so many connections formed and ideas exchanged throughout the evening. We hope everyone left with valuable insights to fuel their professional development!
In a dynamic, round-robin format, each table explored a unique theme, including navigating challenges, adapting in an evolving industry, building professional networks, and discovering your unique voice. Our SML members, who moderated these discussions, found the conversations both engaging and enlightening. Here are some key takeaways we’d like to share:
Be Bold
Networking can be intimidating, especially for those new to the industry. However, a common thread throughout the evening was the reassurance that everyone—regardless of experience—shares similar apprehensions. Take confidence in knowing this, and don’t hesitate to make new connections. You have nothing to lose, and most people appreciate and respect proactive outreach.
Be Genuine and Authentic
The foundation of meaningful relationships is authenticity. Stay true to yourself and confidently express who you are, while also showing genuine interest in others. Being attentive and sincere goes a long way in creating lasting connections.
Seek Multiple Mentors
Mentorship comes in many forms, and there’s no limit to who can offer valuable guidance. Whether or not they’re connected to the arts, different mentors bring diverse perspectives and experiences. Embrace insights from those with varied backgrounds to enrich your journey.
Be Curious and Pay It Forward
Always stay observant and absorb as much as you can from your surroundings. A wonderful way to nurture and re-engage your network is by sharing valuable knowledge you’ve gained. Additionally, helping others can create a ripple effect—those you assist today might think of you in the future.
A huge thank you to Meg Molloy and the Working Arts Club for partnering with us on this event, to DACs for generously sharing their office to host us, and to all the incredible experts who shared their time and knowledge for this initiative! We look forward to more opportunities for collaboration, learning, and connection in the future!
